CONGRATULATIONS TO SYLVIA MAFADA MICELLI
ON THE OCCASION OF HER 100"1 BIRTHDAY
 
WHEREAS, On March 3, 2013, Sylvia Mafalda Micelli, an outstanding citizen and member of her community, joins the bourgeoning ranks of Chicago's centenarians; and
 
WHEREAS, In 1913, Sylvia Mafalda Micelli was born in the Tyrrhenian coastal town of San Lucido in the province of Cosenza, Italy in the region known as Calabria that forms the "toe" of the "Italian Boot". In her early teens, she along with her mother, sister and brother emigrated to this country to join their father who was already living here; and
WHEREAS, After two days at Ellis Island, the family boarded a train to come to this city where they settled in the far south side Grand Crossing neighborhood where Sylvia attended Cornell Grammar School until the sixth grade, leaving to work in her father's grocery store; and
WHEREAS, At the age of 21, Sylvia was joined in Holy Matrimony to Angelo Micelli, Sr. on August 26, 1934. Their union was blessed with Pasquale, Josephine, and Angelo, Jr.; and
 
WHEREAS, In 1967, Sylvia Mafalda Micelli and her family moved to Hegewisch community and built five houses next to one another, signifying the closeness of this family unit. During a period of time, she acted as surrogate grandmother to 98 children who lived on her block. Her own children produced six grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren for her to nurture; and
 
WHEREAS, In spite of her limited formal education, Sylvia Mafalda Micelli has taken on many tasks as a doctor, nurse lawyer, carpenter, painter, bricklayer, plumber, peace landscaper, tuck-pointer, winemaker, seamstress, designer, and model sprinkler; and
 
WHEREAS, The Honorable John A. Pope, Alderman of the 10th Ward, has apprised this august body of this remarkable woman's significant milestone who has made a positive difference in many lives she has enriched; now therefore
 
BE IT RESOLVED That we, the Mayor and members of the City of Chicago City Council, gathered together this 13th Day of February, 2013 AD, do hereby congratulate Sylvia Mafalda Micelli on reaching her centennial year and extend our very best wishes for health and happiness for many more years to come.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED That a suitable copy of this resolution be prepared and presented to Sylvia Mafalda Micelli.
