RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members ofthe Chicago City Council are pleased to honor Marie Lurie Ogden on the upcoming occasion of her one hundredth birthday,; and

WHEREAS, Marie Lurie Ogden was born on July 8, 1917, the second of three children of Anna and Charles Lurie; and

WHEREAS, Her parents were from the Bohemia area of what was then Czechoslovakia. Her father, one often children, owned a department store called Lurie Brothers. Her parents were members of the Washington Boulevard Temple; and

WHEREAS, Marie skipped a year in school and graduated with her brother, a navigator for the Navy during the Korean War. His plane was shot down in North Korea and he was held hostage, presumed dead. He was finally found at a farm in North Korea and one was among the last prisoners released; and

WHEREAS; Marie was raised in Cicero and the Austin community of Chicago and was married to Seymour Ogden, general attorney, for 44 years, both being active in the Democratic Party and advocates for social justice and political reform in both their professional and personal lives; and

WHEREAS; Their home and hearts were always open for family and friends during national and religious holidays. There was always room for one more at the table; and

WHEREAS; Marie earned her Bachelor's Degree at Roosevelt University and her Master's Degree in Psychology from Northwestern University. She also earned a degree from the College of Jewish Studies, the predecessor of Spertus Institute; and

WHEREAS; She taught Sunday school at various temples on the south and west sides of Chicago and was the past President of the Sisterhood at Temple Shalom; and

WHEREAS; Her entire career was in the social service area of government at city, county and state levels; and

WHEREAS; She is a fond aunt to nieces and nephews and a dear friend to many; now therefore

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and Members of City Council of the City of Chicago assembled this 28th day of June, 2017, do hereby honor the upcoming centenary of Marie Lurie Ogden on July 8, 2017; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a suitable copy of this resolution be prepared and presented to Marie Lurie Ogden as a sign of our respect and admiration for her long life and valued service to the community. /
