Declaration of September 13,2015 as "David Kogan Day" in Chicago

 

 

WHEREAS, David Kogan is a true Chicagoan, contributing his talents to the City in business, the artsfflylkjcs and as a good neighbor; and .

WHEREAS, David Kogan was born on September 13, 1945 in Miami, Florida where his Chicagoan parents were stationed during World War Two; and

WHEREAS, upon conclusion of the war, with David in tow, his family returned to their native Chicago, where he has lived his entire life; and

WHEREAS, David Kogan grew up in the Lakeview neighborhood, graduating from Mather High School in 1963 and going on to earn his undergraduate degree at Roosevelt University in 1968; and

WHEREAS, in 1970 David married his beloved wife Esther with whom he raised their children Alex, Annie and dog Bro-Bro; and

 

WHEREAS, David Kogan prides himself as being the voice of reason in a "crazy Jewish extended family;" and

 

WHEREAS, David Kogan worked as a teacher in Chicago Public Schools in the early 1970's before going on 1976 to found David Kogan Photography, now known as DKP Image + Media in the West Loop; and

WHEREAS, David Kogan is a gifted photographer who was an active part of Chicago's "glory days" of commercial photography in the 1970's and 1980's, and has spent his entire adult life photographing Chicago's unique urban landscapes, with a focus on Rogers Park and the lakefront; and

WHEREAS, following years of vigorous protest against the Vietnam War, David was bitten by the electoral campaign bug and has been a fixture in local politics, having worked in the presidential campaigns of Bill Clinton, John Kerry and Barack Obama, the congressional campaigns of Jan Schakowsky and Tammy Duckworth, the mayoral campaign of Rahm Emanuel, as well as those for Alderman Joe Moore, State Senator Heather Steans, State Representative Kelly Cassidy and Jeff Smith's campaign for State Senate; and

WHEREAS, David Kogan has worked tirelessly to build the organizing skills of others through his work with Organizing for America, the Main Street Alliance that worked to pass the Affordable Care Act, and as a leader of the Democratic Party of the 49th Ward; and

WHEREAS, David Kogan is a friend to many, willing to listen to one's problems, offer sage advice and throw in a grumpy comment to lighten the mood; and

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, gathered here this twenty-fourth day of September 2015 A.D., do hereby recognize September 13, 2015 to be "DAVID KOGAN DAY" in Chicago in honor his contributions to the City as an artist, activist, business owner and friend.
