A City Council Resolution Honoring The Life of Mrs. Dorothy Bailey Chambers

 

WHEREAS, Almighty God in His infinite wisdom and judgment has called Mrs. Dorothy Bailey Chambers, an outstanding citizen and woman, to her everlasting reward a few weeks ago, and she recently departed life on this mortal coil on November 7, 2018; and

 

WHEREAS, This august Chicago City Council body has been informed of her passing by the Honorable Michelle A. Harris, Alderman ofthe 8th Ward; and

 

WHEREAS, Mrs. Dorothy Bailey Chambers joyfully established, and celebrated her earthly existence in St. Louis, Missouri. Mrs. Dorothy Bailey Chambers was born as the 2nd of eight children to the loving union of Mr. Kirby and Mrs. Helen Bailey on February 2, 1931. Dorothy's entire family attended St. Louis Cathedral Catholic Church; in adulthood she became a faithful fifty-plus year member of, and served as a longtime lector at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Chicago; and

 

WHEREAS, Dorothy treasured educational excellence, and was an accomplished 1948 graduate of Rosati-Kain high school, receiving her B.S. degree from Fontbonne College in 1952 before moving to Chicago for an internship with Hines VA Hospital. Dorothy enjoyed a 30-year healthcare career as a Registered Dietician at Michael Reese Hospital, was an active member of the professional Flying Black Medics, an airborne group providing health services to impoverished Cairo, Illinois, as well as an employee at the U of Chicago Hospitals, where she met and married her beloved husband of sixty years, Geano Chambers; and

 

WHEREAS, Mr. and Mrs. Chambers lovingly raised their seven children to value education, family and God on Chicago's southeast side in a home filled with laughter, devotion and the great meals she enjoyed cooking. An inveterate traveler who love Christmas, family gatherings and sharing acts of kindness, Mrs. Dorothy Bailey Chambers was blessed with a pleasing personality and infectious smile who never met a stranger, had friends of all ages and was an adored 'mom' to many; and

 

WHEREAS, Dorothy recently slipped away from this earthly realm. She was preceded in death by her parents, four sisters; Marjorie, Dorothy, Marie and Helen; four brothers; Arthur, David, James and John. She is survived by her devoted husband Geano, children: Ray Chambers, Billy Chambers, Roberta Steele, Terrence Steele (Gigi), Geano Chambers (Daphne), Regina Howell (Reginald), Sonja Anderson (Roderick), seventeen grandchildren; twenty-four great-grand children; brother Harold Bailey, sister Rose Bailey and a host of extended family and friends; and

 

THEREFORE, Be It Resolved, That we, the Mayor and members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, gathered here on December 12, 2018 do hereby express our deep sorrow on the passing of Mrs. Dorothy Bailey Chambers, and extend to her family our sincere condolences; and
