Declaration of September 24, 2018 as "Father Michael Garanzini Day" in Chicago

WHEREAS, Father Michael Garanzini has had a distinguished career in higher education with a partWular ^j-** passion for making higher education more accessible to people of all backgrounds; and

WHEREAS, Father Garanzini celebrates his seventieth birthday on Monday, September:

WHEREAS, He currently serves as Secretary of Higher Education for the Society of Jesus and is best kn#wn in Chicago for his leadership as President of Loyola University of Chicago from 2001 until 2015; and

WHEREAS, Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Father Garanzini completed his undergraduate degree from St. Louis University in 1971 before entering the Society of Jesus; and

WHEREAS, Father Garanzini received his doctorate in psychology and religion from the Graduate Theological Union/University of California, Berkeley then taught and held various administrative roles at the University of San Francisco, Gregorian University in Rome, Saint Louis University, Georgetown University; and

WHEREAS, As President of Loyola University of Chicago he led a period of growing enrollment, significant investments to the physical campus, an expansion of academic research, and set the student body on a course toward academic excellence; and

 

WHEREAS, The Loyola campus saw many changes under Father Garanzini, including the innovative Information Commons completed in 2005, Cuneo Hall completed in 2013, plus the renovation and preservation of historic Mundelein Hall, and

 

WHEREAS, Father Garanzini's leadership resulted in the reshaping the academic life at Loyola, including the creation of the Center for Environmental Sustainability, and the Arrupe College, a community college within Loyola University that he describes as "a boot camp for kids who need to get the character and discipline to succeed"; and

 

WHEREAS, Father Garanzini has played many roles in Chicago and around the world as teacher, administrator, counselor and leader to bring knowledge and a spirit of social justice to young people; and

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, gathered here this twentieth day of September 2018 C.E, do hereby recognize September 24, 2018 to be "Father Michael Garanzini, SJ Day" in Chicago in honor of his lifetime of teaching and transformative leadership of Loyola University Chicago; and .

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED That a suitable copy of this resolution be prepared and presented to Father Garanzini.
