TRIBUTE TO GLADYS HARDNICK-BOUYER
WHEREAS, On January 13,1945 Gladys Hardnick-Bouyer was born in Talladega, Alabama, the daughter of Catherine (Hardnick) Pearson and Andrew Lawler; siblings Mattie and Larry; and
WHEREAS, after high school Gladys raised several children including her three biological children Katherine, Letasha and Kyra while earning three degrees: from Kennedy-King . College an Associate of Science Degree in Accounting, from Roosevelt University a Bachelor of Science Degree in Public Administration and from Spertus College a Master of Science Degree in Human Services Administration; and
WHEREAS, Gladys was married to her beloved companion, Mr. Pierce S. Bouyer, Jr. Pierce passed away five years ago. They were deeply committed to each other and his passing is still profoundly felt; and
WHEREAS, for twenty-nine years Gladys was employed by the City Colleges of Chicago. She became her career serving in the position of Supervisor and Program Coordinator in the Continuing Education Department at Chicago City-Wide College for twelve years. For nine years she was the Supervisor in the Adult Education Department at Truman College. Lastly for eight years Gladys was College Advisor at Harold Washington College; and
WHEREAS, Gladys Hardnick-Bouyer has been a proud and committed leader of the Truman College Chapter of the American Association for Women in Community Colleges (AAWCC). She has served as Public Relations Director from 1995-1998, Vice- President from 1997-1998 and President from 1998-1999; and
WHEREAS, Gladys also served as AAWCC Illinois State Section Board of Directors & Membership Vice President from 1999-2004 during which time the membership doubled. She became President of the Illinois State Section in 2004 until 2007; and
WHEREAS, Gladys served her last position with AAWCC as the Region V Director (Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin) on the National Board of Directors, and
WHEREAS, during her tenure at AAWCC Gladys was integral to the planning and facilitation of numerous professional development conferences; and
WHEREAS, Despite Gladys's already busy schedule she also served as Transfer Advisory Board Member of Loyola University from 2003-2006, Counselor Advisory Board Member of St. Xavier University from 2003-2006. Lastly, Gladys served on the Alumni Board of Spertus College; and
WHEREAS, Gladys has been a Jong standing member ofthe Order of the Eastern Star, the female auxiliary of The Masons. She was Directress of various fundraisers and community events, and held numerous positions as an executive officer for her chapter. Furthermore, to this day Gladys is the Editor-in-Chief ofthe "Masonic Flame" publication; and
WHEREAS, on a personal note Gladys is infamous in her community as a lady committed to the betterment of her people and her neighborhood. She is known to work tirelessly to improve the human condition of those in need and strives to preserve the integrity of her community. She is President of the extremely active and long standing 71st St. & Drexel Block Club and is on the Board of Directors ofthe South Oakwood Brookhaven Neighborhood Organization. In addition, she volunteers for Literacy Chicago, the Gary Comer Youth Center and for the Fifth Ward Office of Alderman Leslie A. Hairston; now therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That at the behest of Alderman Leslie A. Hairston, we, the Mayor and fellow members of the City of Chicago City Council do. hereby honor the exceptional woman, stellar career and philanthropic commitments of Gladys Hardnick-Bouyer; and
