A RESOLUTION HONORING THE LIFE OF MAJOR NEO MCCOY SR.

 

WHEREAS, It is with great sadness that the members of this Chamber have been informed of the passing of Major Neo McCoy, Sr. on Monday, October 4, 2021; and

WHEREAS, Major McCoy was a beloved husband, father, brother and son, a union man and lifelong Chicagoan; and

WHEREAS, Major was born on March 24, 1930 to Ivy and Cor (Easley), in Chicago, Illinois as one of nine siblings along with Clarence, Irene, Ruby, Gerri, Ralph, Elizabeth, Charles and Simon; and

WHEREAS, Major attended the historic DuSable High School in the 3rd Ward, before apprenticing to become an electrician with Washington Electric and Files Electric Company; and

WHEREAS, Through his skills as an electrician and great determination, Major went on to become one of the first African American members of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 134; and

WHEREAS, Major married Mary Tate and together had four children, Margaret Holt, Linda Paton, Major McCoy Jr., and Marcus, before marrying Adele White in 1986; and

WHEREAS, Major learned early on in life that he would have to work hard and stay focused to be successful and that lesson not only made him an effective electrician until his retirement in 1995, but a real estate investor, friend, and welcoming neighbor in the Bronzeville community for many years; and

WHEREAS, Major became a fixture in the neighborhood from his daily morning walks with his dear friends Paul Jones and Kenny Fuse, and even ventured out of his comfort zone with Adele to accompany her on a few ski vacations - and eventually admitted to enjoying the annual camping trips; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the Members of the City Council of the City of Chicago gathered here in assembly this 17th Day of November, 2021 A.D., do hereby extend our condolences to the family and friends of Major Neo McCoy, Sr.; and
