City Council Meeting January 23, 2019
RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Patricia A. Sugiyama was born and raised in Michigan where she attended St. Philip Catholic Central High School in Battle Creek and Michigan State University; and
WHEREAS, In 1982 she moved to Chicago and married her husband Glenn Sugiyama in 1985 and they were blessed with two children, Nicole Noelani in 1987 and Glenn Tyler in 1990; and
WHEREAS, Patricia knew early on that she wanted to become a teacher and received her undergraduate degree from Michigan State University, completing a dual major in Child Development and Elementary Education, received a Master's degree from Saint Xavier University, and is a member of the KAPPA DELTA PI International Honor Society in Education; and
WHEREAS, Patricia was passionate about seeing that all children receive a wonderful education to the best of their abilities and she obtained certification to teach Special Education from the University of California and the State of Illinois in the area of Learning Disabilities, in addition to certification in Elementary K-9 and Early Childhood; and
WHEREAS, Patricia has taught at Horace Greeley School, a Blue Ribbon Award winning Chicago Public School, since 1992 in the areas of kindergarten, first, second and gifted second grade and her final assignment at Horace Greeley as a Special Education Teacher; and
WHEREAS, Always striving to do more while at Greeley, Patricia took on the role of teacher mentor for the MINT program (Mentoring and Induction of New Teachers), and was the teacher representative for Greeley's Local School Council from 1998 to 2002, participating in choosing a new administration for Greeley School; and
WHEREAS, Patricia received numerous honors, awards and grants over the years and had several publications, all for the betterment of teaching children, including Golden Apple Nominee, the Rochelle Lee Reading Grant, Urban Gateways Fellowship, Impact II Mentor and Adaptor Grants; and
WHEREAS, Patricia was a Primary Mathematics Specialist & Curriculum Developer at Northwestern University where she researched and developed the kindergarten curriculum of Children's Math Worlds (CMW), a primary mathematics reform curriculum utilized in school districts across the country, and was a Teacher-trainer for Children's Math Worlds at the University of Chicago's Center for School Improvement; and
WHEREAS, Patricia retired from Horace Greeley School on January 7, 2019, after 27 years of dedicated and caring leadership to the staff, students and community to whom she served and was honored with a reception at the school on that day; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED, That we the Mayor of the City of Chicago and members of the City Council, gathered this 23rd day of January, 2019, want to thank Patricia for the many contributions she has made to all children throughout her illustrious career and wish her much happiness in her retirement; and
