MEMORIAL RESOLUTION FOR DR. ANDRES "ANDY" O. BOTUYAN

 

WHEREAS, Dr. Andres "Andy" O. Botuyan, passed away on February 10, 2016; and

 

WHEREAS, This august body has been informed of his death by the Honorable Roberto Maldonado, Alderman of the 26th Ward; and

 

WHEREAS, Dr. Andres "Andy" O. Botuyan was born on November 30, 1933, to the proud parents of Baldomero Callanta Botuyan and Victorina Lopez Obedoza in Villasis, Pangasinan, Philippines; and

 

WHEREAS, Dr. Botuyan received his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Santo Thomas in Manila, Philippines in 1960, and moved to Chicago in 1962 to begin his career as a Surgeon at the MacNeal Memorial Hospital; and

 

WHEREAS, Since beginning his solo practice in 1969, Dr. Botuyan held a variety of distinguished positions. While working with Norwegian American Hospital, he was Senior Attending Surgeon, Chairman of the Department of Surgery, President of Medical Staff and Chairman of the Medical Executive Committee. Dr. Botuyan also served as Attending Surgeon at St. Elizabeth and St. Mary of Nazareth Hospitals, and was Clinical Professor of Surgery at the Ross University College of Medicine; and

 

WHEREAS, Throughout his career, Dr. Botuyan demonstrated tireless dedication to the medical profession, serving as Chairman of the International Medical Council of Illinois, Chairman of the International Association of American Physicians, Treasurer and Trustee of the American College of International Physicians, a member of the American Medical Association and many more medical associations. Dr. Botuyan was named as a Distinguished Fellow at the American College of International Physicians in 1990, and was named as a Fellow by both the International College of Surgeons and the Society of Philippine Surgeons in America; and

WHEREAS, Despite his numerous professional commitments, Dr. Botuyan made it a priority to serve the Filipino community in Chicago and in the Philippines. Dr. Botuyan was Vice President for the Filipino American Council of Chicago, and helped to establish the Dr. Jose Rizal Center in Chicago, supporting the cultural, political, religious and social activities of Filipinos in the Chicago area. He was a charter founder of the Philippine Heritage Endowment Fund, and provided the charity ward at the Jose Reyes Memorial Hospital in Manila. Additionally, Dr. Botuyan, along with the Norwegian American Hospital Lions Club, conducted seventeen charity medical missions to the Philippines, performing critical surgical procedures on thousands of patients; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Botuyan was an active officer of the International Lions Club (NAH Century Lions), a member of the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, and an active member of the Ascension Roman Catholic Parish Church in Villa Park, Illinois; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Botuyan was a fierce advocate for justice, fairness and equality, he was a member of Illinois Task Force on Minority Professionals and the Asian American Advisory Council; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Botuyan received many awards for his work as a surgeon and for his community service activities, and was selected as one of "America's Top Surgeons in General Surgery" in 2008 by the Consumers' Research Council of America; named "Physician of the Year" in 1991 by the Association of Philippine Physicians, "Most Outstanding Filipino in the Midwest" in 1989 by the Cavite Association USA;

received the "Presidential Award of Excellence" in 1989 by the Association of Philippine Physicians, "Most Outstanding Leadership Award" in 1987 by the Asian Human Services of Chicago, "Outstanding Leadership of Excellence" in 1983 by the International Medical Council of Illinois, "Chicago's Most Caring Physician Award" in 1982 by the Metropolitan Chicago Healthcare Council; "Alumnus of the Year Award" in 1979 by the University of Santo Tomas Medical Alumni, and the "Award of Excellence for Humanitarian Services" from 1993 to 2008 by Norwegian American Hospital; and

WHEREAS, Amid Dr. Botuyan's many triumphs, victories and struggles, his legacy remains. Dr. Botuyan wisely one said, "...work, done in truth and love, means one's sanctification and salvation"; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Botuyan is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Irene Furagganan-Botuyan, daughter Katherine Therese Botuyan-Szabo, MD, son-in-law Joshua Szabo, MD, granddaughters Linsey and Emily, sisters Lourdes Botuyan Pascua and Angelina Botuyan Macaraeg, and many loving nephews and nieces; and

 

WHEREAS, A cherished friend and supportive family member to all, Dr. Botuyan will be deeply missed but the remembrance of his dedication to the medical profession and his community will live on in those who knew and loved him; now, therefore,

 

Be It Resolved, That we, the Mayor and members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, gathered this sixteenth day of March, 2016 A.D., do hereby commemorate Dr. Andres "Andy" O. Botuyan for his many lifetime contributions and do hereby extend to his family and many friends our sincere condolences.
