I transmit herewith, together with Aldermen Lee, Manaa-FIoppenworth, Silverstein, Conway, Moore, Ramirez-Rosa, Flail, Waguespack, Nugent, Martin, Reilly, Vasquez, Mitts, Rodriguez, Lawson, O'Shea, Dowell, Mosley, Scott, Hadden, Knudsen, Chico, Villegas, Lopez, Gutierrez, Sposato and Clerk Valencia, a resolution commemorating Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Fleritage Month.

RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month is observed in the United States during the month of May; and
WHEREAS, during Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, the City of Chicago recognizes and celebrates the diverse and vibrant cultures, breadth of achievement, and remarkable contributions of these communities; and
WHEREAS, in 1992, the United States Congress passed Public Law 102-450, designating May of each year as "Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month," and authorizing and requesting the President of the United States and the governor of each state to issue an annual proclamation to observe the month; and
WHEREAS, according to the 2020 United States census, the Asian population has grown to 189,857, a 31 percent increase from the previous census; and
WHEREAS, Asians are the fastest-growing racial or ethnic group in Chicago and now constitute approximately 6.8 percent of the City's residents; and
WHEREAS, Alderperson Nicole Lee of the 11th Ward became the first Chinese American and first Asian American woman to serve on the City Council upon first assuming office on March 28, 2022; and
WHEREAS, Alderperson Leni Manaa-Hoppenworth of the 48th Ward became the first Filipino American to serve as alderperson upon assuming office on May 15, 2023; and
WHEREAS, Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders represent Chicago at various levels of the State and federal governments, including U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth, U.S. Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi, Cook County Commissioner Josina Morita, Illinois State Senator Ram Villivalam, and Illinois State Representatives Theresa Mah, Hoan Huynh, and Kevin Olickal; and
WHEREAS, the City of Chicago is committed to celebrating the multitude of ethnicities, languages, and experiences that enrich and strengthen our City; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Mayor and Members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, assembled this twenty-fourth day of May, 2023, do hereby designate May 2023 as "Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month" in the City of Chicago, and call upon all Chicago to observe this month and recognize the rich heritage of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders.
