RESOLUTION

 

WHEREAS. God in His Infinite Wisdom peacefully ushered Gladstone John (Joseph) Sanders, a beloved patriarch, husband and humble citizen, to his eternal reward on August 22, 2020; and

 

WHERERAS, This august body has been informed of Gladstone Sanders' passing by the Honorable Carrie M. Austin, Alderman of the 34th Ward; and

 

WHEREAS, Born on November 28, 1937 to the union of Gladstone Sanders, Sr. and Ida McGuire, Gladstone will long be remembered for his distinctly infectious smile. A native New Orleanian growing up in the church, he accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age. He embraced service as an altar boy, cherishing his role of supporting the priesthood during mass; and

 

WHEREAS, Gladstone attended the well-respected Holy Rosary Boarding School, and continued on to higher learning, receiving a bachelor's degree from Southern University in Baton Rouge; and

 

WHEREAS, He initiated his professional vocation as a Special Education teacher in the Chicago Public School system. Gladstone would move on to the Boys & Girls Club of Chicago—Henry Horner Club, where he met his "help meet," Tina Bishop. His career at the B&GCC would span more than 20 years, before moving to academia work, accepting employment at the City Colleges of Chicago, before retiring and starting his own foundation, Phalanx Family Services in November of 2002. As founder and president, Phalanx would give his community members access to a variety of health and employment services, including training and job placement, financial supports and reentry for returning residents, to name a few. Gladstone provided a strong leadership, dedication and commitment to ensuring his groundwork's longevity, even beyond his physical retirement as president in 2015. The tenets of Phalanx's outreach continue to be sown to date in authentic love and humanity for his community's people; and

 

WHEREAS, Gladstone would enter into holy matrimony on October 4,1980 with the apple of his eye, the complimentary beautiful and sweet soul, ,Robbie "Tina" Bishop. There love remains an unbreakable and eternal bond, fresh and flourishing an earthly bound of 40 years. He was an attentive soul irtate and homestead steward, loving the company of family and friends, filled with abundance of love, laughter, good conversation, times and music. Gladstone always shared sound wisdom of lessons learned, and was known to be quite a skilled bid whist player. He was affectionately

 

 

called by more than a few nicknames of endearment, including Bae, Daddo, Papadopolis, Pops, Daddy, Daddyo, G-Man, Big Stone and Stone Man; and

 

WHEREAS, The Stone Man touched many lives through genuine kindness, generosity and encouragement, he will long be remembered for his willingness to inspire change and uplift the striving. A true man of God who's;nurturing soul and exemplary accomplishments are honorably immeasurable to all who shared his journey; and

 

WHEREAS, He leaves to cherish his loving memory, life-partner and wife Robbie "Tina" Sanders; children Natasha Hampton (Wayne), Adrienne LaGrand, Tonya Junior (Ricardo), Gladston Sanders and Teia Sanders; siblings Clarence McGuire and Timothy Mitchell; grandchildren Justin Hampton (Joy), Craig Hampton, Nicole Patton (Thomas), Ife Sanders (Stephen), Carlos Morris, Aaron Morris and Cesario Williams; great grandchildren Justice Jones, Hampton, Tyler Hill, Joseph Hill, Cameron Patton, Kayden Morris, Gaiden Williams, Cesario Williams, III and Adama Williams; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and Phalanx Family Services family. He will now reunite with parents Gladstone Sanders, Sr. and Ida McGuire; siblings Russell McGuire and Gerald McGuire, who preceded him in death; now, therefore

 

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, gathered here this 9th day of September, 2020, do hereby extend our most heartfelt condolences to the family, loved ones and friends of Gladstone John (Joseph) Sanders; and
