A Resolution Honoring Anthony "Tony" Nylander
WHEREAS, Urban theorist, laborer, rich, poor—-whatever our station in life, we intellectually and/or instinctively know that as a society we are wholly dependent upon the individual to transform the administrative structures organized as governments into the caring, social structures of true communities; and
WHEREAS, Anthony "Tony" Nylander was such an individual, perpetually working within his roles as husband, brother, friend and neighbor to forge a sense of community that had an indelible impact, not only on his family and friends but on the cities, towns, and villages where he made his home; and
WHEREAS, Tony was that rare individual whose unmitigated selflessness caused him to ask what he could do for others without thought of reward or recognition; and
WHEREAS, A master accountant who belied the notion of a meek numbers-cruncher, Tony was an expert hunter, fisherman, electrician, plumber, mechanic, boat restorer, and home rehabber whose variegated talents were exceeded only by his humility; and
WHEREAS, The media often speak of heroes, but Tony's family and friends have a very special understanding of that necessarily unique combination of qualities that constitutes a hero; and
WHEREAS, Those who knew Tony understand the rarity of a man whose joy was derived from
giving of himself to others and would like to be more like him; and
WHEREAS, They are cognizant of how special was a man who adopted everyone who crossed his
life's path and would like to be more like him; and
WHEREAS, Tony's family and legion of friends recognize the singularity of a man whose love and
concern and sense of justice extended to all around him and would like to be more like him; and
WHEREAS, Tony was a man whose perseverance over and complete disregard for physical setbacks continually served as a source of personal inspiration to all who knew him; now, therefore,
Be It Resolved, That we, Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the City Council of Chicago, gathered here this fifth day of February, 2014, do hereby commemorate the life of Anthony "Tony" Nylander and while we extend our deepest sympathy to his beloved wife, Joanne, we celebrate the strength, passion and accomplishment that is his enduring legacy; and
Be It Further Resolved, That a suitable copy of this resolution be prepared and presented to Joanne Nylander.
