TRIBUTE TO AUDREY NEWMAN-MILES
 
WHEREAS, In His Infinite Wisdom, Almighty God has granted Audrey Neman-Miles, an outstanding educator and librarian, eternal rest on February 1, 2013; and
 
WHEREAS, On July 6, 1955, Audrey Newman-Miles started life as one of three children born to Herbert J. and Armatine Newman on the south side of the city. She attended St. Cyril Catholic School from kindergarten through 8lh grade, and then attended High School at St. Thomas Aquinas the Dominican where she graduated in 1973. During her high school years she worked as a librarian's aid where she would develop her love of books; and
 
WHEREAS, In 1986, Audrey Newman-Miles enrolled full time at the University of Illinois Chicago, and received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Education/Reading Concentration in 1989. She spent her first year after graduation as a Cross Categorical Special Education teacher at the State of Illinois Children's School & Rehabilitation Center; and
 
WHEREAS, Audrey Newman-Miles spent 25 years as a tenured Chicago Public School teacher the Henderson School. During this time, she planned and produced many start-up programs for the students. She was a CPS collaborator at the Oriental Institute, a facilitator for the DePaul Read-A-Thon, and a site leader for the Science Club Network at the Museum of Science & Industry. Additionally, she was a student facilitator for Athletes Against Drugs, a Reading Connection school Ccoordinator, an after-school reading teacher, and Spelling Bee coordinator for the Harold Washington Foundation; and
 
WHEREAS, In 2007, Audrey Newman-Miles took on the daunting task of rebuilding the Library at Henderson. For many years the library had not been utilized as a place to check out books, research, or learn. The shelves lay bare with very few books and outdated encyclopedias and dictionaries. She enrolled in Dominican University to obtain her Master's Degree in Library Science and Information so that she could become a librarian; and
 
WHEREAS, Audrey Newman-Miles spent the last three years of her career fulfilling her dreams as a librarian. During this time, she transformed Henderson Library into a fully functional Library and Media Center. Through pursuing various grants, practicing patience, persistence and perseverance, she rebuilt the library into one that would stimulate the students on various levels; and
 
WHEREAS, To honor the memory of Audrey Newman-Miles, the Honorable Toni L. Foulkes, Alderman of the I5'1' Ward, has introduced legislation that designates 5600 to 5700 South Winchester as "Audrey Newman Miles Way" and a sign-unveiling ceremony occurred on June 10; now therefore
 
BE IT RESOLVED That we, the Mayor and members ofthe City of Chicago City Council, gathered together this 26th Day of June, 2013 AD, do hereby express our sincerest sorrow upon learning of the untimely passing of Audrey Newman-Miles and extend our deepest sympathies to her family, friends and all others whose lives she touched.
