A resolution recognizing Police Officer Dorelle "Cannon" Brandon and honoring the woman officers ofthe Chicago Police Department

 

Whereas, in honor of Women's History Month we recognize the life of Police Officer Dorelle "Cannon" Brandon, Star: #2684, first woman Chicago Police Officer to be slain in the line of duty and honor the courage of women police officers. Today, we thank them for their willingness to sacrifice their personal safety and concerns to ensure the safety of our citizenry. The bravery, the devotion to duty, and the love of the community of these heroes have forever earned a place in the hearts and memories of the citizens they willingly risked and risk thier lives to protect; and

 

Whereas, Police Officer Dorelle "Cannon" Brandon was born in Chicago on December 27, 1948, to Charles and Delores Cannon. Dorelle was the youngest of 9 children. Upon graduating from John M. Harlan High School she decided to join the Chicago Police Department in the footsteps of her step-father, Norman White. Quickly after joining CPD, she met and married fellow officer Matthew Brandon. Their union gave the world 3 children, Sean Scott Brandon (who is an active Chicago Police Officer) Marvin Edward Brandon and Barbara Sharee Brandon. They chose to raise their family on 78th and Yates; and

 

Whereas, Police Officer Dorelle "Cannon" Brandon was a life-long learner, deciding to pursue her associate's degree, only being a couple of hours from completion at the time of her death. Officer Dorelle Brandon was assigned to the 003rd District as a tactical officer and served as a dedicated public servant who performed her duties in a manner that has distinguished the entire law enforcement profession; and

 

 

Whereas, Police Officer Dorelle "Cannon" Brando, demonstrated commitment and care in the exercise of her duties and was an eager protector of the public and her fellow officers she willingly volunteered to be detailed to the undercover narcotics unit; and

 

Whereas, Police Officer Dorelle "Cannon" Brandon was fatally wounded by friendly fire on December 24, 1984, after being pulled into the house by a drug dealer. The shooting did occur on 107th and Calumet, in the 005th District on 12/24/84. Police Officer Dorelle "Cannon" Brandon was a 6 year veteran of the force. Her life and work have inspired countless women including her niece Police Officer Tanya Scott, of the 006th district.; now therefore

 

 

BE IT RESOLVED, we the mayor and members ofthe Chicago City Council, recognize and declare solidarity with the women who serve, and who have served, as police officers with the Chicago Police Department, for their distinctive service and dedicated efforts, earning our highest respect and deepest gratitude, which must be recognized and honored for their selfless and heroic service and invaluable contribution to upholding justice, enforcing the rule of law, and protecting the innocent in the city of Chicago, the State of Illinois and in this nation.

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Police Officer Dorelle "Cannon" Brandon.
