RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The Members of this Chamber are proud to congratulate our friend and colleague, Alderman Proco Joe Moreno, on his nine years of dedicated service to the people of the 1st Ward and the City of Chicago; and

WHEREAS, Born in Moline, Illinois, Alderman Moreno attended Moline High School and graduated from Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business and Art. After graduating from college, Alderman Moreno moved to Chicago, where in 2003 he earned his M.B.A. Degree from DePaul University; and

WHEREAS, Prior to entering public service, Alderman Moreno was the vice-president of a suburban graphic arts and printing company. A resident of Chicago's Wicker Park neighborhood for more than seventeen years, Alderman Moreno served as an elected member of the Local School Council for Jose de Diego Community Academy, where he worked directly with parents, faculty and 1st Ward residents to strengthen the school; as a board member of Humboldt Park Social Services, an organization designed to empower, serve and advocate for homeless and economically disadvantaged persons in the Humboldt Park community; as an active participant in the CAPS program, focusing on community involvement and public safety; as a graduate from the Metropolitan Leadership Institute ofthe United Neighborhood Organization ("UNO"), which mentors political leaders within the Hispanic community; as a volunteer, local organizer, and member of the national board for the Campaign to the End the Death Penalty; as a member of the Wicker Park Committee; and as a volunteer with Chicago Cares; and

WHEREAS, Initially appointed in 2010 as Alderman ofthe 1st Ward by Mayor Richard M. Daley, Alderman Moreno was re-elected by his constituents to two additional consecutive terms in office; and

WHEREAS, Throughout his career on Chicago's City Council, Alderman Moreno's legislative priorities for the lsl Ward included decreasing crime; ensuring adequate funding for Chicago Public Schools; expanding the City's tax base through development; and bringing more affordable housing units to the Ward, which includes Wicker Park, Bucktown, East Village, Ukrainian Village, Logan Square, and the southeastern tip of Roscoe Village; and

WHEREAS, Alderman Moreno's many initiatives as Alderman include implementing a free trolley along Milwaukee Avenue;supporting a grid system for street cleaning and snow removal; privatizing recycling; consolidating departmental inspections of businesses; developing a tiered fee system for city stickers to raise revenue; and instituting a text alert system to remind residents ofthe need to move their motor vehicles on scheduled street cleaning days,to avoid receiving a ticket; and

 

 

WHEREAS, Alderman Moreno helped lead the charge to protect working people by sponsoring Chicago's Minimum Wage and Paid Sick Leave Ordinances, which guarantee all workers in Chicago a wage of at least $13 an hour indexed to inflation and paid sick days; and by supporting property tax relief for families making less than $100,000 per year; and

WHEREAS, Alderman Moreno served with distinction on many City Council Committees, including most recently as Chairman of the Committee on Human Relations, and as a member of the Committee on Committees, Rules and Ethics; Committee on Economic, Capital and Technology Development; Committee on Finance; Committee on Health and Environmental Protection; Committee on Special Events, Cultural Affairs and Recreation; and Committee on Zoning, Landmarks and Building Standards; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and Members ofthe City Council of the City of Chicago, assembled this tenth day of April, 2019, do hereby extend to Alderman Proco Joe Moreno our deepest gratitude and thanks for his many years of exceptional service to the people of Chicago, and our best wishes for continued success in all of his future endeavors; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Alderman Proco Joe Moreno as a token of our appreciation and esteem.
