Ladies and Gentlemen:
I transmit herewith a resolution regarding our departing friend and colleague, Alderman Schulter.
Your favorable consideration of this resolution will be appreciated.
RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Members of this Chamber are proud to congratulate our friend and colleague, Alderman Eugene ("Gene") Schulter, on his thirty-six years of dedicated service to the people of the 47th Ward and the City of Chicago; and
WHEREAS, Alderman Schulter is a lifelong resident of the North Side neighborhood he has served; and
WHEREAS, In 1975, at age 26, Alderman Schulter was elected to the Chicago City Council as one of the youngest aldermen ever to serve in this distinguished body; and
WHEREAS, A progressive leader, who believed in empowering his constituents to shape their own destiny through community meetings and regular interaction with their elected representative, Alderman Schulter worked tirelessly with neighborhood organizations and local business leaders to develop and fund programs to better the lives of his constituents; and
WHEREAS, Over the course of his storied political career, Alderman Schulter served as chairman of the City Council Committee on License and Consumer Protection; Committee on Parks and Recreation; Committee on Cable Television; and Committee on Historical Landmark Preservation. At various times, he also served as a member ofthe Cbmmittee on the Budget and Government Operations; Committee on Finance; Committee on Committees, Rules and Ethics; Committee on Traffic Control and Safety; and Committee on Zoning; and
WHEREAS, A respected and effective legislator, Alderman Schulter's many citywide accomplishments include spearheading the drive to streamline the City's business licensing process; securing passage of a comprehensive Landmark Ordinance to preserve and protect Chicago's historic buildings and works of art for future generations to enjoy; sponsoring the Landscape Ordinance to require greenery and trees in all new residential, commercial and industrial developments throughout the City; achieving greater community control of the City's parks through the creation of local park advisory councils; leading the effort to guarantee equitable city-wide cable service; and strengthening the Animal Care and Control Ordinance to ensure the welfare of abused and abandoned animals; and
WHEREAS, As a result of Alderman Schulter's many efforts to make the 47th Ward a community where families want to raise their children and long-time senior residents want to stay, the 47th Ward's boasting rights include the Sulzer Regional Library, the busiest library in Chicago; the Northeast Region Levy Center, Chicago's first senior citizen center; a revitalized and vibrant Lincoln Square Mall; the Ravenswood Industrial Corridor; the Old Town School of Folk Music; innumerable capital and operational improvements at each of the 47th Ward's public schools; new police, fire and court facilities; improved play lots for children in several local parks; and the creation of the Greening of Ravenswood Committee to ensure the continued beautification of the 47th Ward; and
WHEREAS, The quintessential public servant, Alderman Schulter is an active member of several civic, professional and fraternal organizations, including the Levy Senior Citizens Center Advisory Board; Sierra Club; National League of Cities; NLC Leadership Training Institute; Greening of Ravenswood Committee; Saint Benedict's High School Advisory Council; and the Neighborhood Boys & Girls Community Leadership Council. Alderman Schulter has also served as Committeeman of the 47th Ward Democratic Party; and
WHEREAS, Alderman Schulter's unique blend of talent, intellect, sound judgement and cooperative spirit will be sorely missed by his colleagues in the Chicago City Council; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and Members ofthe City Council ofthe City of Chicago, assembled this fourth day of May, 2011, do hereby extend to Alderman Eugene ("Gene") Schulter our heartfelt gratitude and thanks for his many years of exceptional service to the people of Chicago, and our best wishes for continued success in all of his future endeavors; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Alderman Eugene ("Gene") Schulter as a token of our appreciation and esteem.
