RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, David M. Hartigan has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 82; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

WHEREAS, David is survived by Kathleen Barrett, and together they were parents of a wonderful family that brought them great joy and pride, five children Rachel Dewey (Chauncey), David L. Hartigan, Peter Hartigan [Vanessa), Alexander Hartigan, Andrew Hartigan (Aimee) and eleven grandchildren Chauncey III, Oliver, Catherine D., David M. II, Margaret, Rohan, Madeline, Alexander II, Michael, Luke, and Catherine H; and

WHEREAS, Born and raised in Rogers Park, David graduated from Hardey Prep and Loyola Academy; and

WHEREAS, He is a graduate of Georgetown University where he majored in History, a passion that continued throughout his life, and also graduated with a Juris Doctor from Loyola University Law School; and

WHEREAS, After graduating from Loyola, David joined the U.S. Securities &

Exchange Commission as a trial lawyer investigating securities fraud until his appointment to the United States Attorney's Office; and

WHEREAS, As Assistant U.S. Attorney, Northern District of Illinois, David served as the Chief ofthe Tax Division, Deputy Chief ofthe Civil Division and litigator in the Criminal Division. He uniquely served on a bi-partisan basis under four U.S Attorneys Bauer, Hanrahan, Foran and Thompson; and

WHEREAS, David was a founding partner of Hartigan & Ward. Later, he became a Partner at Wilson & Mcilvaine and Altheimer & Gray; and

WHEREAS, he served in several consulting and board level roles in politics, law and non profit sectors such as Catholic Conference of Illinois, Legislative Counsel, representing Cardinals Cody & Bernardin and the Catholic Bishops of Illinois Hotel Employee and Restaurant Employee International Union (HERE), Trustee & Chairman of the Finance Investment Committee with over 250,000 employees,

ARDC - Attorney Registration & Disciplinary Commission, Chairman appointed by the Illinois Supreme Court for over 10 years, Catholic Lawyers Guild of Chicago, Chairman for over 10 years, Federal Bar Association, President Chicago Chapter Goodman Theater, Board of Trustees, Shakespeare Marionette Company, Board Member, Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, Trustee; and

WHEREAS, David's expansive love extended to the entire Hartigan Clan, his nephews and nieces, John Hartigan [Maureen), Elizabeth Connelly [Matt), Laura Jenkins (Jeff), Cristina Soeiro (Stephen Collins), David Soeiro, AileenCaffrey (Henry), Andrew Furlong, and Jonna Hirsch (Brent), and his older brother Honorable Neil F. Hartigan (MaryLou), sisters Mary Soeiro (Raul), and Coletta "Itti" Furlong (John); and

WHEREAS, To his beloved family, David imparts a legacy of generosity, compassion, devotion to family and unwavering faith in God; now, therefore

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this fifteenth day of March, 2023, do hereby commemorate David for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of David M. Hartigan.
