RESOLUTION HONORING CHICAGO POLICE OFFICERS FOR THE SUCCESSFUL APPREHENSION OF SUSPECT IN DOWNTOWN ATTACK

 

WHEREAS, On Thursday, August 27, 2020, Chicago Police Officers arrested a suspect on charges of robbery and assault after a thorough investigation of an attack and robbery two days earlier that left an elderly victim unconscious; and

 

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of the Officers' efforts by the honorable Brendan Reilly, Alderman of the 42nd Ward; and

 

WHEREAS, On the morning of Tuesday, August 25, 2020, while entering her building, a resident of Streeterville was viciously attacked and robbed of her purse after three people allegedly followed her home; the victim required medical treatment after the incident; and

 

WHEREAS, The Chicago Police Department led a diligent investigation into the matter, reviewing surveillance tapes, following leads, asking questions, and working with the victim; and

 

WHEREAS, The Police Department's hard work, exemplified by the tireless efforts of Officers Roberto Paz and Jerome Turbyville, paid off when the suspect was identified and arrested only two days after the incident occurred; and

WHEREAS, After arresting the suspect, apprehending Officers Roberto Paz, Jerome Turbyville, and supporting Officers Emily Ascencio, Nora Valdes, and Lieutenant Tim Weiglein, all ofthe 18th District, visited the victim to inform her of the suspect's arrest; and

 

WHEREAS, Detectives Lawrence J. Aikin, Jr. of Area North and Erik Shearer of Area 3 both played critical roles in the investigation, working tirelessly to gather the facts of the case; detective Shearer made frequent contact with the victim to track information on the victim's stolen credit card and to check on her wellbeing; and

 

WHEREAS, Officers Ascencio and Valdes have gone above and beyond the call of duty to make the victim feel safe and have shown true friendship to her, including by spending their own money to bring her flowers and to get her a new ID holder, a scarf, and a belly pack to replace her stolen purse; and

 

WHEREAS, The performance of Officers Roberto Paz and Jerome Turbyville, the successful collaboration and professionalism of the involved officers, lieutenant, and detectives, as well as the entire Chicago Police Department, and the strength of the victim throughout the event, led to a resolution the residents of the City can be proud of; now, therefore

 

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, gathered here this ninth day of September, 2020, do hereby express our profound gratitude to 18th District Officers Roberto Paz (#10383), Jerome Turbyville (#16764), Emily Ascencio (#5800), and Nora Valdes (#8413); Lieutenant Tim Weiglein(#217); and Detectives Lawrence J. Aikin, Jr. of Area North, and Erik Shearer of Area 3, for their efforts on behalf of the people of Chicago; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That suitable copies ofthis resolution be prepared and presented to Officers Paz, Turbyville, Ascencio, and Valdes; Lieutenant Weiglein; and Detectives Aikin, Jr. and Shearer, and placed in each of their personnel files as token of our appreciation, gratitude, and respect.
