WHEREAS, The Church of Our Saviour was established on April 21, 1867, and celebrates over 150 years of membership in the Lincoln Park Community; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of this milestone by the Honorable Micheie Smith, Alderman of the 43rd Ward; and
WHEREAS, The Church of Our Saviour has been located in its historic building at 530 West Fullerton Parkway since 1888; and
WHEREAS, The Church of Our Saviour is Lincoln Park's Episcopal parish, welcoming all members of the community; and
WHEREAS, The Church of Our Saviour has been a spiritual home to many notable Chicago residents including Dorothy Day, founder of the Catholic Workers Movement; and
WHEREAS, The Church of Our Saviour has served as a refuge and support for the area since it sheltered residents after the Great Fire in 1871; and
WHEREAS, The Church of Our Saviour was instrumental in founding the Horizon Hospice in 1978 and the Care for Friends Foundation in 2013 to expand its services to the community; and
WHEREAS, The Church of Our Saviour has provided hundreds of meals a week and other health and support programs to the homeless and needy for 50 years;
WHEREAS, For 31 years ihe youth group at Church of Our Saviour has volunteered to work in needy communities around the U.S. rebuilding and repairing homes in states including Kentucky, Louisiana, Minnesota, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia; and
WHEREAS, The Church of Our Saviour assists the community as a center for various activities such as scouting, youth groups, concerts and community meetings; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and Members ofthe City Council ofthe City of Chicago, assembled this day twenty-eighth day of June, 2017, do hereby congratulate the Church of Our Saviour on the 150!h anniversary of its founding.
