WHEREAS, Juanita Y. Douglas has served the people of Chicago for 25 years as an employee
of Chicago Public Schools teaching our city's youth on the subjects of
sciences; ^ . r.
WHEREAS, Juanita Douglas earned both a State of Illinois Master Teaching certificate and the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards Early Adolescence certificate to prove her commitment as a lifelong learner;
WHEREAS, She was given the Kathy Osterman Outstanding Educational Employee Award in honor ofthe late Mayor Harold Washington for her achievements.as an educator at Lincoln Park High School, because of her leadership and selfless contributions to her students;
WHEREAS, Juanita Douglas served for two years on the Teacher Leadership Advisory Council to former Chicago Public School CEO Arne Duncan, and was part of the team that received the largest competitive federal grant ever received by Chicago Public Schools;
WHEREAS, She designed and implemented the "Empowerment Through Education" Heritage and Curriculum Fair for the American Federation of Teachers Black Caucus Chicago Chapter to ensure that K-12 educators were able to provide students with learning activities aligned with the Illinois State Common Core Standards and the Chicago Framework for Teaching and Learning Standards;

WHEREAS, Juanita Douglas has been a 20-year member of Education Institute of the HistoryMakers, the nation's only African American oral history archive, contributing educational programming and materials using the digital archive and website. Her work has received national awards and she was a featured speaker in the "Digital Innovation Meets the Black Experience" in Washington, D.C., as part of the HistoryMakers Library of Congress Program;
WHEREAS, She has been an Action Civics Teacher for 19 years with Mikva Challenge, a non-partisan, not-for-profit organization that encourages youth to participate in the political process through Project Soapbox and the oratorical speech competition, the Student Election Judges Program, and the Action Civics Showcase and Fair;
WHEREAS, Juanita Douglas has served the teachers of Chicago Public Schools as an eLearning Mentor, an Intel Education Master Teacher and Senior Trainer, a pre-service Cooperating Teacher, and a mentor for those seeking National Board for Professional Teaching Standards achievement;
WHEREAS, She has written curriculum for the Robert F. Kennedy Foundation Speak Truth to Power Education Program, the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, the National Council for Economic Education, the Field Museum Field Ambassador Program, the Chicago Teachers Union Foundation Reparations Won!, as well as Black Lives Matter in Schools Week, and the National Council for Economic Education;
WHEREAS, Juanita Douglas has received two fellowships from Fund for Teachers to travel to Accra, Kumasi, Bonwire, and Cape Coast in Ghana, West Africa; and Rio De Janeiro, Ipanema, and Salvador, Bahia in Brazil; to student the role of African American women in the diaspora and the trade of enslaved Africans across the Atlantic Ocean;
WHEREAS, She received a fellowship to Johannesburg, South Africa, and the University of Hawaii to develop curriculum related to consumer economics and personal finance for use in Chicago Public Schools;
WHEREAS, Juanita Douglas was a member of Think Tank on Global Education at the Harvard University Graduate School of Education to advance global competency in classrooms throughout the world;
WHEREAS, She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Hampton University and also earned her Masters of Art degree in Political Science from the University of Buffalo in New York;
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, gathered here this 29th day of May 2019, do hereby commend and honor Juanita Y. Douglas for her enduring legacy and the. impact she has made on many Lincoln Park High School students;
AND LET IT BE RESOLVED, That August 20, 2019, be proclaimed Juanita Y. Douglas Day as a way of honoring her 25 years of service;
