SALUTE TO THE BRONZEVILLE CHILDREN'S MUSEUM
 
 
WHEREAS, In 1993, Peggy A. Montes, an outstanding community activist and educator, founded the Bronzeville Children's Museum, the only African American children's museum in the United States, whose mission was to educate young citizens from the ages of three through nine concerning the contributions, culture and history of African Americans; and
 
WHEREAS, Although the museum is located on South Stony Island in Chicago's Calumet Heights neighborhood, it is named for the area of this city where many African Americans settled after leaving the South. It was there they created a booming business, cultural, political and residential center known at first as "Black Metropolis" and later as "Bronzeville"; and
 
WHEREAS, The current location of the Bronzeville Children's Museum first opened its doors on February 21, 2008. It has become one of this city's vital educational venues that has touched the lives of many children and adults; and
 
WHEREAS, Using a hands-on approach, the Bronzeville Children's Museum has been very successful in increasing literacy and developing self-esteem in children from an array of abilities, backgrounds and cultures by providing interactive learning opportunities; and
 
WHEREAS, The learning activities, interactive exhibitions and unique programs of the Bronzeville Children's Museum incorporate the arts, humanities, mathematics and sciences in order to engage the young visitor's minds in creative and conceptual thinking as well as expose them to new technologies that are geared at a level that makes it easy for children of all abilities and backgrounds to comprehend and enjoy; and
 
WHEREAS, The Honorable Michelle Harris, Alderman ofthe 8th Ward in which the Bronzeville Children's Museum is located has apprised this august body of the noteworthy achievements of this iconic institution; now therefore
 
BE IT RESOLVED That we, the Mayor and members ofthe City of Chicago City Council, gathered together this 13th Day of March, 2013 AD, do hereby salute the Bronzeville Children's Museum for its exemplary contribution to our city and have therefore declared Thursday, February 21, 2013 to be "Bronzeville Children's Museum Day" throughout Chicago.
