Resolution Honoring Eleanor Wayman on her 100 Birthday
WHEREAS, Eleanor Wayman was born November 28,1918; and
WHEREAS, Eleanor, in March of 1943, at the age of 26, enlisted in the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps, serving four months and 20 days until her honorable discharge when the Army disbanded the WAAC later that year; and
WHEREAS, Eleanor returned to Chicago, only to become restless after a few years, re-enlisting in the newly formed Women's Army Corps, where she served as a Company Clerk with the WAC Detachment 9955th Technical Service Unit at William Beaumont General Hospital in El Paso, Texas; and
WHEREAS, Eleanor was honorably discharged again after earning the rank of Corporal on October 29, 1946, continuing as an inactive reservist, and;
WHEREAS, after again returning to work in Chicago, Eleanor in October of 1950 received Orders for Extended Active Duty, serving in Tokyo, Japan, during the Korean War for four months; and
WHEREAS, Eleanor again returned to Chicago, being again honorably discharged from service in August of 1952, where she became active in the American Legion, serving as a Post Commander in the late 1950s; and
WHEREAS, Eleanor in the early 1990s became an active member of Vietnam Veterans Against the War, attending their events as long as she was able, and receiving a standing ovation at the group's 40th anniversary event in 2007; and
WHEREAS, Eleanor for 47 years has been a member of St. Constance Parish, attending daily mass, and serving as an usher on Sundays, and assisting with Women's Club events; and
WHEREAS, in 2012, Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women, St. Constance members voted Eleanor Woman of the Year; and
WHEREAS, Eleanor remains highly engaged in the life of her parish and her community, and
WHEREAS, Eleanor will celebrate her 100th birthday on November 28, 2016, and Alderman John Arena, on behalf of the residents of the 45th Ward, has notified this august body of Eleanor's birthday and her significant contributions to her parish, her city, and her country; now
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Mayor and members of the City Council of the City of
Chicago, gathered here in assembly on November 1, 2016, do hereby express sincere thankfulness for
Eleanor's contributions and offer a heartfelt congratulations and best wishes for a wonderful 100th
birthday. . "/>
