Honorary Resolution 9th Annual SEA Blue Prostate Cancer Walk/Run

WHEREAS, Us TOO International is the oldest and largest prostate cancer education and support network in the world and its partner organization The Wellness Place, a recognized regional leader in cancer education and support, are hosting the 9th Annual SEA Blue Prostate Cancer Walk/Run on September 15th in Chicago's beautiful Lincoln Park to raise money and awareness to support prostate cancer patients, survivors and their families in their fight with this deadly disease; and

WHEREAS, Us TOO was founded in 1990 by five Chicago area men who had been diagnosed with and treated for prostate cancer and determined there was no place to go for prostate cancer patients to learn about the most current treatments for the disease or no place to receive the loving care and support so important to men battling this terrible cancer and so established this well respected and internationally known not-for-profit organization to provide those services; and

WHEREAS, The Wellness Place was founded over a decade ago by two Barrington area women as they recovered from breast cancer treatment who envisioned a community-based, non-medical support center in the Northwest suburbs of Chicago where people living with cancer could gather for counseling, education, encouragement and empowerment at no fee; and

WHEREAS, men of all ages need to know the facts about prostate cancer and the risks involved;
  • Prostate Cancer is the most common non-skin cancer in the U.S.
  • One new case occurs every 2.2 minutes
  • One man dies from prostate cancer every 17.5 minutes
  • African-American men have the highest incidence rate of prostate cancer
  • African-American men have a 60% higher chance of developing prostate cancer than white men
  • Approximately 30,000 men will die of prostate cancer this year, second only to lung cancer
  • Over 2,000,000 men are living with prostate cancer
    • One in every six men will develop prostate cancer during his lifetime, compared to one in eight women developing breast cancer; and

WHEREAS, the 9th Annual SEA Blue Walk/Run brings together over 2,000 prostate cancer patients, family and friends to put their support and commitment to this important cause into action with their donations and participation and to spread the word that blue is the nationally recognized color of prostate cancer just as pink is the color for breast cancer and where SEA Blue stands for Support, Educate and Advocate; and

WHEREAS, The Honorable Michele Smith, Alderman for the 43rd Ward, has apprised this august body of this significant event being offered by these prestigious local charities and servants to all men with prostate cancer; now, therefore;

BE IT BE RESOLVED, that we, the Mayor and members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, gathered here on the 11th day of September 2013 A.D., do hereby proclaim the month of September as Prostate Cancer Awareness Month in Chicago; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a suitable copy of this resolution be prepared and presented to Us TOO International and The Wellness Place.
