WHEREAS, the Unit Church Ushers League, Chicago Zone, will celebrate its 100th Anniversary on September 28, 2019; and
WHEREAS, the City Council has been informed of this significant event by the Honorable Pat Dowell, Alderman of the 3rd Ward;-and
WHEREAS, the Unit Church Ushers League, Chicago Zone's history began in 1919, as the brainchild of John C. Williams. Mr. Williams sought to create an interdenominational organization of Christian men and women dedicated to enhancing the service of its members with their Church, and to establishing bonds between doorkeepers throughout the Chicago area through instruction and fellowship; and
WHEREAS, the inaugural nine church usher boards of Chicago included: Bethel African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.); Greater Walters A.M.E. Zion; Quinn Chapel A.M.E., Salem Baptist (now Greater Salem Baptist); South Park Methodist (now Hartzell Memorial United Methodist); St. John Baptist Church (now St. John Church Baptist); St. Mary A.M.E.; Olivet Baptist; and St. Paul C.M.E. As a tribute, John C. Williams Founders Day is celebrated every year in January; and
WHEREAS, the humble, yet great birth of the United Church Ushers League, Chicago Zone, has since blossomed into other Zones, a state organization, and a national affiliate that brings together Church Ushers from across the country for training and spiritual support; and
WHEREAS, the Unit Church Ushers League, Chicago Zone's continued commitment to service to its membership, and their communities through its outreach and education ministries, is meeting a heartfelt need in our world today; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Mayor and the City Council members of the City of Chicago hereby assembled on this thirteenth day of March, 2019, do hereby heartily congratulate the Unit Church Ushers League, Chicago Zone on its 100th Anniversary, and express our gratitude for its ongoing good work; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a suitable copy of this resolution be prepared and

presented to Unit Church Ushers League, Chicago Zone. MBld AII3
