WHEREAS, Mr. George Black has been granted eternal peace by Almighty God, it is with great sadness that the members of this Chamber learned of his death; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by the Honorable Walter Burnett, Jr., Alderman of the 27th Ward; and
WHEREAS, Mr. George Black was born on November 13, 1935, one of eight children, to the union ofthe late Lee Black and Zeoler Harris, in Morgan City, Mississippi; and
WHEREAS, George made his proclamation to Christ at an early age, and received his childhood education from O'Bannon Middle School in Greenville, Mississippi; and
WHEREAS, In 1955, George moved to Chicago, Illinois, then five years later, on April 6, 1960, united in Holy Matrimony to Bernice Johnson. Of that union were born three children: Demetrice, George II, and Stacey; and
WHEREAS, George was an excellent father and provider for his family. He always encouraged his children to take their education seriously, and to be loving, caring, and respectable individuals. One of those children, his only son and considered his "Road Dog", is George Black II, Director of Field Personnel for CDOT (Chicago Department of Transportation); and
WHEREAS, George held many positions with various companies throughout the City of Chicago. One of his most enjoyable, as well as memorable positions was held at the Ambassador East-Pump Room, He was one of the first men of color to assist in the Ballroom where he frequently had the pleasure of serving his favorite trio known as "The Rat Pack" (Sammy Davis, Jr., Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin). This opportunity lead to his employment with Playboy Enterprises. He worked as a Personal Assistant to "The Great Hugh Hefner" for fourteen years. Later, his love for cars lead him to the position of a Parking Attendant for Doral Plaza, where he respectfully retired after thirty-five years of service; and
WHEREAS, George enjoyed many days riding on his motorcycle, working on cars, planting and tending his garden, cooking, fishing, and spending time with his family and friends; and
WHEREAS, George, affectionately called: Poppie; Papa B; and Ranger; ended his fight with Leukemia on Monday, October 26, 2015, his wife and family were right there by his side; and
WHEREAS, George graced many lives with his kindness, his love, his compassion, and willingness to serve and help others. He was so very loved by so many that his absence from this earth will leave a painful void but filled with wonderful memories; and
WHEREAS, George leaves to cherish his memories: his devoted wife, Bernice; two daughters, Demetrice and Stacy Black; one son, George Black II; one brother, Clarence (Bessie) Black; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many great friends; now, therefore,
Be It Resolved, That we, the Mayor, and the members of the Chicago City Council assembled here this eighteenth day of November 2015, do hereby express our sincerest condolences to the family, friends, and the many others, whose life was touched by Mr. George Black; and
Be It Further Resolved, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of the late Mr. George Black.
