Memorial Resolution
WHEREAS, in His infinite wisdom, Almighty God has granted eternal peace to Virginia Johnson on May 24, 2014; and
WHEREAS, the Honorable Deborah Graham, Alderman ofthe 29th Ward, has informed this esteemed body of the transition of Virginia Johnson; and
WHEREAS, born on January 26,1923, to Nannie Ortha Cobbins (daughter of Elizabeth and George Cobbins) and Joseph Johnson, Virginia was raised in a Christian home, and was an active member of Pleasant Ridge M.B. Church; and
WHEREAS, Virginia married her husband Louis Redmond in 1940, and the couple had three children together: Laythella, Iradson, and Calvin. She later added to her loving family when she met Tommie Jordan in 1955 and they welcomed two children: Veronica and Thomas; and
WHEREAS, Virginia adopted her granddaughter Carolyn Redmond in 1966 and raised her as her daughter, and in 1987 she adopted her grandson Jeremy Brye and raised him as her son; and
WHEREAS, Virginia was loved by all who knew her, as evidence by her nickname as "The Mayor of Monroe;" she was always there to lend a helping hand to anyone; and
WHEREAS, Virginia was preceded in death by Louis Redmond; Tommie Jordan; her sisters Voiltaska and Doris; her brothers Willard, Lorenzo, and George Johnson; and grandchildren LaTanya Bailey-Hill, Sir Kevin Redmond-Partee, and Sheila Davis; and
WHEREAS, Virginia is survived by her children Laythella Redmond, Calvin Redmond, Thomas (Dana)'Redmond, Jersey Brye, Iradson Bailey, Carolyn (Isaac) Redmond Carter, and Veronica Gaines; her godsons Ollie Smith and Lorenzo (Ardie) Louden, Sr.; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and a great amount of cherished friends, including JoAnn Woodard; now, therefore
Be It Resolved, that we, the Mayor, and members ofthe City Council ofthe City of Chicago gathered here this tenth day of December, 2014, do hereby express our sorrow on the passing of Virginia Johnson, and extend to her family and friends our sincere condolences; and,
Be It Further Resolved, that a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Virginia Johnson.
