RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, This august Body wishes to acknowledge the numerous contributions of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) communities to the City of Chicago; and
WHEREAS, The LGBT communities for decades have been, and continue to be, integral to the vibrant culture and climate of Chicago. These communities continue to contribute to academic, economic, artistic and social spheres within and around our greater community; and
WHEREAS, The month of June was designated Pride Month to commemorate the Stonewall Inn riots which occurred on June 28, 1969, marking the beginning ofthe modern LGBT movement; and
WHEREAS, One of the most historic and highly anticipated events - the 48th Annual Pride Parade - took place on Sunday, June 25, 2017, and brought together an estimated 1,000,000 people; and
WHEREAS, Chicago is also the home ofthe first recognized LGBT Rights organization in the Country. The organization, The Society for Human Rights, was established in 1924 by Henry Gerber; and
WHEREAS, The City of Chicago remains committed to protecting the civil rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities as the power and purpose of this iconic event proves vital in our unified effort to forge a more open and just society; and
WHEREAS, Chicago's active and involved Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender communities undeniably improve the quality of life in Chicago, and Pride Month serves as a call to our collective consciousness to persist in the fight to eradicate prejudice and discrimination everywhere; and
WHEREAS, The City of Chicago has employed numerous measures and programs to strengthen the LGBT communities. In 2015 the City extended its health care benefits to include gender confirmation surgery; a benefit for the transgender community. The City has also ensured that LGBT people in need have adequate, affordable housing and access to health care and support services, and has provided training and resources to community agencies to ensure they create open, affirming spaces for Chicagoans of all orientations and identities. In 2016, the City Council passed an amendment to the Chicago Human Rights Ordinance to prohibit discrimination in the use of private facilities, such as bathrooms in public establishments. Also in 2016, Mayor Emanuel placed a restriction on City-funded travel to North Carolina in response to North Carolina's discriminatory policies. These and other actions taken by the City of Chicago have served to bring about a more inclusive city in which all residents feel welcomed and secure in their identities; and
WHEREAS, We look forward to the continued contributions of the LGBT communities, knowing that this will make Chicago an even greater city than it is today; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and Members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, assembled this twenty-eighth day of June, 2017, do hereby pay tribute to the many contributions of Chicago's LGBT communities.
