RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Marcia Gray Martin has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 81; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of her passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, Marcia Gray Martin was the loving wife of former Wheaton Mayor Robert Martin; and
WHEREAS, Marcia Gray Martin was the much-adored mother of Charles and Liz and the grandmother of five to whom she imparted many of the fine and gracious qualities that she possessed in abundance; and
WHEREAS, A widely admired artist, architect and educator, Marcia Gray Martin was an integral part of the Wheaton community where she lived for fifty years; and
WHEREAS, Born in Chicago's South Shore neighborhood, Marcia Gray Martin graduated as the only woman in 1956 from the architectural program at the Illinois Institute of Technology which was headed by the iconic architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe; and
WHEREAS, While attending ITT, Marcia Gray Martin met her future husband, a fellow yearbook editor, and the couple settled in Wheaton; and
WHEREAS, In 1980 Marcia Gray Martin began teaching architectural history, site design, drafting and sketching at the College of DuPage where she was admired for her unfailing gentleness and patience with students; and
WHEREAS, Above all else, Marcia Gray Martin considered herself an artist and worked in many media, including sketching, watercolors, sculpture and china painting; and
WHEREAS, In 1997 Marcia Gray Martin earned a master's degree in liberal arts from North Central College in Naperville; and
WHEREAS, Marcia Gray Martin published a book in 2010 that was a composite of 45 years of sketches of Wheaton and traced the growth, history and vitality of the community over the decades; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Marcia Gray Martin serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, Marcia Gray Martin will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by her many relatives, friends and admirers; and
