RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Honorable Chokwe Lumumba has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 66; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Chokwe Lumumba was a widely admired human rights lawyer and the Mayor of Jackson, Mississippi; and
WHEREAS, Raised in Detroit, the Honorable Chokwe Lumumba was born to Lucien and Priscilla and was involved in the civil rights struggle from an early age; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Chokwe Lumumba graduated from Kalamazoo College and earned his law degree from Wayne State University; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Chokwe Lumumba formed a law firm in
' j Detroit in 1978 and successfully defended sixteen prisoners who faced
murder charges following a riot at Pontiac Prison; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Chokwe Lumumba served one term in the Jackson City Council and was sworn into office as Mayor in July of 2013; and
WHEREAS, During his term as Mayor, the Honorable Chokwe Lumumba persuaded voters to support a referendum in January of 2014 to increase the local sales tax to fund road, water and sewer improvements; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of the Honorable Chokwe Lumumba serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared the Honorable Chokwe Lumumba to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Chokwe Lumumba will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, the Honorable Chokwe Lumumba imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
