RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Honorable Lorraine H. Morton has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 99; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of her passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Lorraine H. Morton was a widely admired civic leader and the longest-serving Mayor of the City of Evanston; and
WHEREAS, The first African-American and the second female to serve as the Mayor of Evanston, the Honorable Lorraine H. Morton was elected in 1993 and served until 2009 when the City named its civic center after her; and
WHEREAS, A native of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, the Honorable Lorraine H. Morton attended Northwestern University where she earned a master's degree in education; and
WHEREAS, Before entering public life, the Honorable Lorraine H. Morton was a teacher at Foster Middle School and Nichols Middle School and was a popular Principal from 1977 to 1989 at Haven Middle School; and
WHEREAS, Prior to becoming Mayor, the Honorable Lorraine H. Morton was a member of the Evanston City Council; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of the Honorable Lorraine H. Morton serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, Known for her efforts as a "bridge builder," the Honorable Lorraine H. Morton was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by her many friends and neighbors; and
WHEREAS, To her beloved family, the Honorable Lorraine H. Morton imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twentieth day of September, 2018, do hereby commemorate the Honorable Lorraine H. Morton for her grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to her family; and
