RESOLUTION

 

WHEREAS, Lonnie Brooks has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 83; and

 

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

 

WHEREAS, Lonnie Brooks was a legendary blues singer and guitarist who forged a unique Chicago-Louisiana blues style; and

 

WHEREAS, Born Leo Baker in Dubuisson, Louisiana, he changed his name to Lonnie Brooks after moving to Chicago in 1960; and

 

WHEREAS, Lonnie Brooks found work in clubs on Chicago's West Side as well as in Gary, Indiana and the Rush Street entertainment district; and

 

WHEREAS, Lonnie Brooks recorded singles on various labels, including Chess Records, Mercury, Midas and USA Records; and

 

WHEREAS, In 1969 Lonnie Brooks recorded Broke an' Hungry, his first album for Capitol Records; and

 

WHEREAS, Lonnie Brooks enjoyed a highly successful career as a beloved member of Chicago's music scene; and

 

WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Lonnie Brooks serve as an example to all; and

 

WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared Lonnie Brooks to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and

 

WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Lonnie Brooks imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore

 

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this nineteenth day of April, 2017, do hereby commemorate Lonnie Brooks for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and

 

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Lonnie Brooks.
