RESOLUTION HONORING MARY ANTHONY GALLAGHER ON HER 100th BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION
WHEREAS, Mary Anthony Gallagher born on September 15, 1913 in Bunnacurry, Achill Island, County Mayo in Ireland, celebrated her 100th birthday, and joins the wise ranks of centenarians; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of this prestigious occasion by the Honorable Patrick O'Connor, Alderman of the 40th Ward; and
WHEREAS, Mary Anthony Gallagher, born in the village of Bunnacurry, among the mountainous landscape and crisp sea air of northwestern Ireland, in a house built by her father for her mother, Mary McGinty, and shared with her siblings Patrick, Cissy, Anne, John, Joseph, Anthony, Thomas and Jimmy; and
WHEREAS, Mary left Achill Island at the young age of ten to begin earning a wage picking potatoes in Scotland; and
WHEREAS, Mary relocated to the United States during World War II in 1943, first settling in Cleveland, Ohio, then arriving in Chicago in 1953, where for forty-eight years she worked as a housekeeper and cook, using her gift for caretaking and bringing culinary comfort to others, until her retirement in 1990; and
WHERAS, Mary A. Gallagher has faithfully participated in the democratic process of her adopted home country and voted for the Democratic Party in every election since her naturalization as a U.S. Citizen in 1949; and
WHEREAS, Among the highlights of Mary's 100th birthday included a celebration at Chief O'Neil's in Chicago where her nieces and nephews, who traveled from Achill Island for the occasion, presented to her the Centenarian Bounty with a signed letter by Michael D. Higgins, President of Ireland, and monetary gift from Ireland; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this thirteenth day of November, 2013 do hereby congratulate Mary A. Gallagher on her 1001 Birthday and this significant milestone and best wishes for much continued health and happiness; and
