RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, George Sams has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 87; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, A resident of the Bronzeville neighborhood, George Sams was a widely admired member of the law enforcement community and the loving husband of La Verne; and
WHEREAS, Born in Meridian, Mississippi, George Sams enlisted in the United States Navy during World War II and served in both the European and Pacific Theaters of Operation; and
WHEREAS, George Sams remained in the Navy until 1951 when he transferred to the Coast Guard, a move which brought him to Chicago; and
WHEREAS, In. 1955 George Sams was hired as a motorman for the Chicago Transit Authority and according to a local newspaper was a hardworking individual "who never went a day without a job"; and
WHEREAS, In 1957 George Sams joined the Chicago Police Department where he displayed strong leadership ability and was a stickler for following procedure; and
WHEREAS, George Sams served during his long and illustrious career as the Commander of the Wentworth Area Violent Crimes Unit and the Commander of the Grand Crossing District before retiring in 1990 as an Assistant Deputy Superintendent in charge of the Internal Affairs Division; and
WHEREAS, George Sams was an active member of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE); and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of George Sams serve as ah example to all; and
WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared George Sams to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and
WHEREAS, George Sams was an individual of great courage, intelligence and loyalty who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and
