MEMORIAL RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, God in His Infinite Wisdom has called Mrs. Octavia Alene Cannon-Jackson, most beloved citizen to her eternal reward, March 12, 2014; and

WHEREAS, This august body has been informed of her passing by the Honorable Carrie M. Austin, Alderman of the 34th Ward; and

WHEREAS, Born on February 10, 1920 in Fitzhugh Arkansas, Octavia was the third daughter of nine children born to James and Ida Cannon. Both parents taught school and her father was known in the community as "Professor Cannon." All of her siblings preceded her in death; and

WHEREAS, Octavia had faith in God and believed in the Methodist principles. When she moved to Chicago, she joined, Faith Temple United Methodist, Bethel AME, and Carter Temple CME Church. She was an avid bible reader and a faithful member of the Willing Workers Club; and
WHEREAS, In the 1940's during World War II, Octavia worked at the Ford Motor Company in Madison, Illinois . Octavia's efforts during wartime refuted the misconception that women are incapable of manual and technical laboring. While at the Ford Motor Company, Octavia met and married Walter Jackson. They were married for over fifty years and had two children, Walter Jr. and Janette. Octavia's husband and children preceded her in death; and
WHEREAS, Octavia was very skilled with her hands and secured a job with the Hart Schaffher & Marx headquarters at 101 North Wacker Dr. downtown Chicago. She was a professional master seamstress and made wedding gowns. She was also a skilled hairstylist. After retirement, Octavia volunteered working in the Englewood community food pantries and the alderman's office. Later the family moved on 100th and May Street, where she was active in the 4 in 1 Block Club; and
WHEREAS, Octavia leaves to cherish her memories: daughter/granddaughter Dorrian, four great-granddaughters Kristina, Jacqueline, Justice, Destiny, also a grandson Jeremiah, a special relative/friend Sarah, special niece/ guardian Evelyn, special niec...
