WHEREAS, It is with great sadness that the members of this chamber learned of the departure of Louis John Dye on September 4, 2017; and
WHEREAS, This esteemed body has been notified of his passing by the Honorable Emma Mitts, Alderman of the 37lh Ward; and
WHEREAS, Louis John Dye was born on November 24, 1922, to the late Ollie Clayton Dye and Rythus Dye, Sr. in Hernando, Mississippi. Rythus Dye, Sr. was a World War I veteran. Louis was the eldest of ten siblings; and
WHEREAS, Louis was a devout member of Pleasant Grove CME Church in Eudora, Mississippi. He walked several miles on a dusty road to get to church; and
WHEREAS, Louis served with distinction in the Army during World War II from 1943 to 1945. He was a private first class in the 1321st Engineering Battalion at Camp Sutton in North Carolina and was discharged with honor. His exemplary service was honored in a proclamation from the Honorable United States Representative Danny K. Davis of the 7th Congressional District in 2012 and also in a resolution passed that same year by this body; and
WHEREAS, In 1950, Louis and his family relocated to Mark Tree, Arkansas. There he met his soul mate Irma Ware. In 1954, Louis moved with his wife, child, parents and sibling, to Chicago, Illinois. He had nine children; and
WHEREAS, Louis worked various jobs to support his family. He eventually found permanent employment at Rock Island Railroad where he worked until retirement; and
WHEREAS, Louis attended church every Sunday at Lena A. Hamlett CME Church, now Hamlett-lsom CME Church. He was active in the church, serving as Trustee, Steward, Steward Emeritus and even janitor; and
WHEREAS, Louis touched the lives of all who knew him through his perseverance and faith. He will be deeply missed, but the memory of his character will live on in those who knew and loved him; now, therefore,
