RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Margaret O'Donnell has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of eighty-four; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of her passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, A native of County Mayo, Ireland, Margaret O'Donnell was the loving and devoted wife of the late William; and
WHEREAS, Margaret O'Donnell was the much-adored mother of Maureen, Eileen, Sheila and Michael and the grandmother of eight; and
WHEREAS, Known as "Peggy," Margaret O'Donnell left her native Ireland at the age of eighteen, promising her mother that she would keep the family together despite the distance; and
WHEREAS, After leaving Ireland in 1944, Margaret O'Donnell traveled first to London where she worked as a nurse's aid in a tuberculosis ward during the Blitzkrieg of World War II; and
WHEREAS, In 1950 Margaret O'Donnell emigrated to the United States where she married and settled on the Northwest Side of Chicago near St. Bartholomew Parish; and
WHEREAS, Margaret O'Donnell returned frequently to Ireland for more than fifty years to celebrate holidays, weddings, and milestone moments; and
WHEREAS, Margaret O'Donnell and her husband often worked five jobs between them in order to put their four children through college; and
WHEREAS, A talented cook and baker, Margaret O'Donnell used her culinary skills to show her support and compassion for neighbors and friends who were ill or who had lost a loved one; and
WHEREAS, A woman of dignity, grace and charm, Margaret O'Donnell will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by her many relatives, friends, and neighbors; and
WHEREAS, To her beloved family, Margaret O'Donnell imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this sixth day of July, 2011, do hereby commemorate Margaret O'Donnell for her grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to her family; and
