Resolution Concerning Latino Hiring At Chicago City Colleges
WHEREAS, City Colleges of Chicago is a great asset for all Chicagoans, spread over seven campuses and six satellite sites from the North side to the West side to the South side; and
WHEREAS, the thirteen locations employ 1,872 faculty and 3,915 staff and serve more than 115,000 students annually; and
WHEREAS, the City Colleges operate on a budget of over $206 million dollars paid for by tax payers; and
WHEREAS, City Colleges embrace Reinvention with the goals to drive greater degree attainment, job placement, and career investment; and
WHEREAS, City Colleges offers the Chicago Star Scholarship guaranteeing great Chicago Public School students free tuition; and
WHEREAS, City Colleges stalled and delayed when asked for simple statistics by Alderman Gilbert Villegas ofthe 36th Ward; and
WHEREAS, the same data was requested from every Chicago agency and every other agency fulfilled the request rapidly and accurately; and
WHEREAS, after six months of asking, City Colleges produced data that seems suspicious to Alderman Villegas and the Latino Caucus of the Chicago City Council; and
WHEREAS, according to City Colleges statistics, the student population has gone from 28% Hispanic five years ago to 40% in five years; and
WHEREAS, 28.9% of Chicagoans identify as Hispanic; and
WHEREAS, 46% of Chicago Public School students identify as Hispanic; and
WHEREAS, 76% of City College Star Scholars identify as Hispanic; and
WHEREAS, according to City Colleges, 15% ofthe employees and 8% of the faculty is Hispanic; and
WHEREAS, no educational institution is at its best when 76% of its best students only identify with 8% of its teachers; and
WHEREAS, City Colleges is supported by tax payers of all races and ethnicities; and
WHEREAS, Chicago City Council has a responsibility to oversee all resources provided by tax payers; and
