RESOLUTION


WHEREAS, The Honorable David Orr has announced his intention to retire at the close of his seventh term as Cook County Clerk, ending a highly remarkable career in politics spanning four decades; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of this event by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

WHEREAS, A lakefront progressive from the Rogers Park community, the Honorable David Orr launched his political career in 1979 when he ran for Alderman of the 49th Ward; and

WHEREAS, While working as a professor of history and urban affairs at Mundelein College, the Honorable David Orr narrowly won the seat in an upset victory; and

WHEREAS, As Alderman of a lakefront ward populated by renters, the Honorable David Orr won passage in the 1980s of the landmark Tenant's Rights Ordinance which afforded legal protections for decades; and

WHEREAS, Upon the death of Mayor Harold Washington, the Honorable David Orr briefly served as Interim Mayor until the City Council voted to appoint Eugene Sawyer as Acting Mayor; and

WHEREAS, In 1990 the Honorable David Orr handily won election to become Cook County Clerk and subsequently cruised to victory six more times in office; and

WHEREAS, The durable popularity at the polls of the Honorable David Orr has been rooted in his unblemished record of integrity and dedication to the highest ideals of public service; and

WHEREAS, The announcement of the Honorable David Orr's retirement has brought wide praise of his career in public service; and

WHEREAS, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle called the Honorable David Orr "a voice for progressive politics, accountability and transparency in government" while Mayor Rahm Emanuel said that he has "left an indelible mark on the City of Chicago and Cook County"; and

WHEREAS, The integrity, hard work and dedication of the Honorable David Orr serve as an example to all; now, therefore
