RESOLUTION


WHEREAS, James Schlesinger has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 85; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

WHEREAS, James Schlesinger was the nation's 12th Secretary of Defense and the loving husband of the late Rachel; and

WHEREAS, James Schlesinger was the much-adored father of eight children to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and

WHEREAS, A native of New York City, James Schlesinger graduated from Harvard University and joined the Pentagon in 1973; and

WHEREAS, James Schlesinger served under Presidents Richard M. Nixon and Gerald Ford as Secretary of Defense and advocated a flexible response of limited nuclear strikes that replaced the policy of mutually assured destruction; and

WHEREAS, James Schlesinger previously served as Director of the Central Intelligence Agency and Chairman of the Atomic Energy-Commission; and

WHEREAS, James Schlesinger returned to the White House to serve as America's first Energy Secretary under President Jimmy Carter; and

WHEREAS, After leaving office, James Schlesinger worked at Lehman Brothers and Kuhn Loeb, Inc., and consulted on defense issues with President George W. Bush; and

WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of James Schlesinger serve as an example to all; and

WHEREAS, James Schlesinger will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and

WHEREAS, To his beloved family, James Schlesinger imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this second day of April, 2014, do hereby commemorate James Schlesinger for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
