Resolution: John G. "Jack" Markowski
WHEREAS, The Members of this Chamber are pleased to honor John G. "Jack" Markowski, on the occasion of his retirement after a distinguished career as a leader in community development and affordable housing in Chicago; and
WHEREAS, The City Council of Chicago has been notified of this news by The Honorable Harry Osterman, Alderman of the 48th Ward; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Markowski's influence spread across the entire City, but he first planted his roots in the community of Edgewater in the 48th Ward in 1992, working as the Executive Director for the Edgewater Community Council for 7 years; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Markowski aided the Edgewater community through his development of many affordable housing programs in the Edgewater area; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Markowski served the Chicago Department of Housing for 15 years, including as Housing Commissioner from 1999-2007; and
WHEREAS, During his tenure as Housing Commissioner, Chicago created, improved, and preserved more than 89,000 units of affordable housing; and
WHEREAS, With his keen intellect and strong work ethic, Mr. Markowski led the development and implementation of some of Chicago's most important and effective affordable housing policies; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Markowski has spent the last 14 years as the President and CEO of the Community Investment Corp., Chicago's largest non-profit neighborhood housing lender; and
WHEREAS, Under his leadership, CIC has loaned more than $900 million to help small developers purchase and support 22,500 affordable apartments in 54 Chicago neighborhoods; and
WHEREAS, CIC is now nationally recognized as one of the country's most important and creative community-focused lenders; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Markowski will be remembered as a creative, hard-working, and dedicated leader and colleague; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and Members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, assembled this twenty-third day of June 2021, ...
