RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Jimmy M. Lago has officially retired from his position as Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Chicago; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of this event by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, Over the course of more-than forty-year career, Jimmy M. Lago has touched the lives of many and been a tireless advocate for the Catholic Church in Illinois; and
WHEREAS, In 1996, Jimmy M. Lago assumed the helm of Catholic Charities as Executive Director; and
WHEREAS, From 1998 to 2000 Jimmy M. Lago was the Executive Director of the Catholic Conference of Illinois, a group that upholds "Catholic Social Teaching by advocating for favorable state legislation and regulatory policies" regarding pro-life issues, marriage, education, social services, health care and other topics; and
WHEREAS, Appointed in 2000 by Francis Cardinal George, Jimmy M. Lago was the first layman to serve as Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Chicago; and
WHEREAS, As Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Chicago for thirteen years, Jimmy M. Lago formulated and implemented many important policies for the third-largest Catholic diocese in the United States; and
WHEREAS, In all of his roles, Jimmy M. Lago has shared his spirit of leadership, wisdom and insight with many in Chicago and beyond; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, dedication and faith of Jimmy M. Lago serve as an outstanding example to us all; and
WHEREAS, We honor Jimmy M. Lago for his many years of service as he begins a new chapter in his life; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twenty-fourth day of July, 2013, do hereby commend Jimmy M. Lago for his tireless devotion to the teachings and mission of the Catholic Church and do hereby declare that July 24, 2013, shall be recognized as Jimmy M. Lago Day throughout the City of Chicago; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Jimmy M. Lago.
