RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, On June 17, 2013, a report was received by the Chicago Police Department that an individual was damaging a fire hydrant with a sledgehammer; and
WHEREAS, When Officers Max Ortiz, Star ##10987, and Ruben Ramirez, Star ##14984, arrived on the scene they discovered that brass rungs had been removed on a total of ten fire hydrants, rendering them inoperable and causing a public safety issue; and
WHEREAS, Officers Ortiz and Ramirez checked nearby scrap yards to determine of the subject was selling the rings, but to no avail; and
WHEREAS, The officers discovered that the City of Chicago Water Department pays $90 for each brass ring and that the labor cost to repair the fire hydrants would be additional; and
WHEREAS, Armed with information provided by Officers Ortiz and Ramirez, fellow officers F. Perez, Star # 18398 and A. Muhammad, Star #12020, were on patrol on June 18, 2013, checking on fire hydrants when they came upon a suspicious subject kneeling next to a fire hydrant who had a screwdriver and sledge hammer lying next to him; and
WHEREAS, Further investigation revealed that the subject had nine fire hydrant brass rings hidden in his backpack and that a total of nineteen nearby fire hydrants were found to have been rendered inoperable n the area; and
WHEREAS, The subject was taken into custody and read his rights and transported to the 12th Police District where he was interviewed by Detective Stephen M. Grenzia and his colleagues; and
WHEREAS, It was determined that the subject was selling the brass rings at a scrap yard at Roosevelt Road and Kostner Avenue for $5 to $6 per ring; and
WHEREAS, The subject was charged with a Class 2 Felony for theft of government property; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this sixth day of May, 2015, do hereby congratulate Officers Ortiz, Ramirez, Perez and Muhammad and Detective Grenzia on their hard work and professionalism which ...
