Resolution
WHEREAS, Chicago Police Department Officers Sergio Valdez and Michael Lawrence have been credited with saving the life of a 75-year-old heart attack victim who collapsed on Michigan Avenue on Tuesday, March 24, 2015; and
WHEREAS, Officers Valdez and Lawrence were on bike patrol when they were flagged down on Michigan Avenue at Walton Street in order to assist a man who was lying on the ground unconscious; and
WHEREAS, When they arrived on the scene, Officers Valdez and Lawrence found that the man had stopped breathing and had no vital signs; and
WHEREAS, In a desperate attempt to revive the man, Officers Valdez and Lawrence sprang into action and immediately began to administer cardio pulmonary resuscitation; and
WHEREAS, As Officer Lawrence administered chest compressions, a doctor jumped out of her vehicle and rendered further assistance; and
WHEREAS, The heart attack victim vomited as he regained consciousness and the officers rolled him onto his side to clear his airways; and
WHEREAS, The officers then ensured that the man's tongue did not roll back in his mouth and result in suffocation; and
WHEREAS, The doctor disappeared from the scene before providing police with any information as the man was transported for emergency treatment to Northwestern Memorial Hospital; and
WHEREAS, The officers credited their swift-moving bicycles which are able to weave in and out of traffic congestion with the quick response.to the emergency situation; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this fifteenth day of April, 2015, do hereby congratulate Officers Sergio Valdez and Michael Lawrence on their heroic and life-saving actions; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Officers Sergio Valdez and Michael Lawrence.
