RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Stephanie Louise Kwolek has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 90; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of her passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, A native of New Kensington, Pennsylvania, Stephanie Louise Kwolek was a pioneering chemist who developed the lifesaving polymer known as Kevlar; and
WHEREAS, Born to Polish immigrants, Stephanie Louise Kwolek earned a degree in chemistry from Margaret Morrison Carnegie College of Carnegie Mellon University; and
WHEREAS, Stephanie Louise Kwolek joined DuPont Company's Buffalo, New York facility in the mid-1940s and made the breakthrough in 1965 while searching for a lightweight fiber to replace steel in automobile tires; and
WHEREAS, Kevlar is five times stronger than steel and has become commonly used in bulletproof vests worn by law enforcement officers and military personnel; and
WHEREAS, Stephanie Louise Kwolek's discovery of Kevlar has saved countless lives worldwide; and
WHEREAS, In recognition of her groundbreaking work, Stephanie Louise Kwolek was awarded the Chemical Pioneer Award from the American Institute of Chemists in 1980 and the DuPont Lavoisier Medal for outstanding technical achievement in 1995; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Stephanie Louise Kwolek serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, Stephanie Louise Kwolek will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by her many relatives, friends and admirers; and
WHEREAS, To her beloved family, Stephanie Louise Kwolek imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this thirtieth day of July, 2014, do hereby commemorate Stephanie Louise Kwolek for her grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to her family; and
