Resolution Honoring Neighbors for Affordable Housing
WHEREAS, in the winter of 2017, and in direct response to the vitriolic opposition to a mixed-income housing development planned for 5150 North Northwest Highway, a group of neighbors organized to found the non-profit organization Neighbors for Affordable housing; and
WHEREAS, Neighbors for Affordable Housing worked to dispel the stigmas surrounding affordable housing, organizing events, and going door to door to talk to their neighbors; and
WHEREAS, Neighbors for Affordable Housing partnered with community members and other organizations to advocate for quality, accessible housing for persons with disabilities and veterans on the Far Northwest Side of Chicago; and
WHEREAS, Neighbors for Affordable Housing remained steadfast in their support of affordable housing despite incurring extreme harassment and intimidation from the opposition; and
WHEREAS, through their ceaseless advocacy and determination, 5150 North Northwest Highway earned City approvals; and
WHEREAS, Neighbors for Affordable Housing evolved their group, building their organizational capacity and skills so they now advocate for housing equality and equity across the City of Chicago; and
WHEREAS, Neighbors for Affordable Housing successfully petitioned to add a referendum on rent control to the Municipal Ballot in three precincts in the 45th Ward, sparking important conversations about gentrification and neighborhood stability; and
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Mayor and members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, gathered here in assembly on April 10, 2019, do hereby express sincere thankfulness to Neighbors of Affordable Housing for their contributions to our City as advocates, compassionate neighbors, and leaders for housing rights, and offer our heartfelt congratulations on their accomplishments; and
