RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Honorable Roland Burris, a former United States Senator, will celebrate the joyful occasion of his 80th Birthday on August 3, 2017; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of this event by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Roland Burris served as a member of the United States Senate from January of 2009 to November of 2010 and succeeded President Barack Obama in the seat; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Roland Burris began his career in 1963 as a national bank examiner for the United States Treasury Department and from 1964 to 1973 served as a Vice President of Continental Illinois National Bank; and
WHEREAS, From 1973 to 1977, the Honorable Roland Burris served as Director of tire Illinois Department of Central Management Services; and
WHEREAS, In 1978 the Honorable Roland Burris was elected to the first of three terms as Illinois State Comptroller and made history as the first African-American elected to statewide office in Illinois; and
WHEREAS, In 1990 the Honorable Roland Burris continued his highly successful political career when he was elected to serve as Attorney General for the State of Illinois; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Roland Burris served as Senior Counsel to the law firm of Gonzalez, Saggio and Harlan and a principal in Burris & Lebed Consulting; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Roland Burris was recognized on numerous occasions as one of the most one-hundred influential Americans by Ebony Magazine; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Roland Burris possesses the intelligence, character and reason that are the attributes of a great leader; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twenty-eighth day of June, 2017, do hereby congratulate the Honorable Roland Burris on the occasion of his 80th Birthday and do hereby declare that August 3, 2017 shall be recognized as Vie Honorable Roland Burris Day throughout the City of Chicago; and
