RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Meir Dagan has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 71; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, Meir Dagan was a former head of the Mossad Intelligence Agency for the State of Israel from 2002 to 2011; and
WHEREAS, Born in the Ukraine to Holocaust survivors, Meir Dagan was promoted to the rank of Major General in the Israel Defense Forces; and
WHEREAS, In 1971 Meir Dagan received the Medal of Courage for tackling a terrorist who was holding a live grenade; and
WHEREAS, A warrior for his country who was renowned as "a daring fighter and commander," Meir Dagan fought in the 1973 Yom Kippur War and the 1982 Lebanon War; and
WHEREAS, As a somber reminder of persecution against the Jewish people, Meir Dagan carried with him a picture of his grandfather being humiliated by the Nazis shortly before they executed him; and
WHEREAS, As the Director of the Mossad, Meir Dagan was known for his innovative strategies in battling terrorism; and
WHEREAS, The courage, sacrifice and dedication of Meir Dagan serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, Meir Dagan will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Meir Dagan imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this thirteenth day of April, 2016, do hereby commemorate Meir Dagan for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Meir Dagan.
