RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Aretha Franklin has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of her passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, Aretha Franklin, "The Queen of Soul," was an American music legend whose career spanned six decades; and
WHEREAS, The daughter of a minister, Aretha Franklin was raised in Detroit, Michigan, and found fame and success after signing with Atlantic Records in 1966; and
WHEREAS, One of the best-selling artists of all-time, Aretha Franklin won 18 Grammy Awards and her countless classic hits included "You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman," "Respect," "I Say A Little Prayer, "Daydreaming," "Freeway of Love" and "Chain of Fools"; and
WHEREAS, Aretha Franklin was the Queen of gospel-charged soul, rhythm and blues, jazz and pop music; and
WHEREAS, In 1980 Aretha Franklin appeared in the iconic movie "The Blues Brothers," much of which was filmed in Chicago; and
WHEREAS, Aretha Franklin was the recipient of our nation's highest civilian honor, "The Presidential Medal of Freedom," and
WHEREAS, The talent and dedication of Aretha Franklin serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, Aretha Franklin was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by her many relatives, friends and admirers; and
WHEREAS, To her beloved family, Aretha Franklin imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twentieth day of September, 2018, do hereby commemorate Aretha Franklin for her grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to her family; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Aretha Franklin.
