RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The American Friends of Hebrew University will honor David H. Hoffman at its Torch of Learning Award dinner on May 18, 2016; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of this event by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, David H. Hoffman is a widely admired member of the legal community and a former Inspector General of the City of Chicago who currently serves as a partner at Sidley Austin LLP; and
WHEREAS, The Torch of Learning Award recognizes individuals identified with the highest standards of professional achievement and its awardees have included Frank Church, Howard Cosell, President Ronald Reagan, Allan "Bud" Selig, Fran Drescher, Don Shula, Ira L. Sorkin and Scott Turow; and
WHEREAS, The Midwest Region of the American Friends of Hebrew University have been proud to name the Torch of Learning Award in memory of Jerold S. Solovy, in recognition of his significant contributions to humanity throughout his illustrious legal career; and
WHEREAS, Funds raised through the Jerold S. Solovy Torch of Learning Award Dinner will provide scholarships for students to study at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel's foremost institution of higher learning and research; and
WHEREAS, A graduate of Yale University and the University of Chicago Law School, David H. Hoffman served from 1998 to 2005 as an Assistant U.S. Attorney where he led investigations into health care fraud, bank fraud, civil rights violations and organized crime conspiracies; and
WHEREAS, David H. Hoffman was promoted to Deputy Chief where he supervised the newly-created gang unit and also served as co-head of the office's Project Safe Neighborhoods anti-gun violence program; and
WHEREAS, From 2005 to 2009, David H. Hoffman was the City of Chicago's Inspector General and transformed the office into a strong, independent anti-corruption agency; and
