RESOLUTION HONORING THE CONTINUED USE OF THE FORMER 13th DISTRICT
POLICE STATION BY THE COOK COUNTY SHERIFF
 
WHEREAS, the building is a familiar part ofthe neighborhood with historical associations to the community going back over fifty years; and
WHEREAS, it was the professional home of law enforcement officers who kept the community safe and secure, often with selfless acts of bravery and heroism; and
WHEREAS, the building is a surviving and well-preserved example ofthe work ofthe City of Chicago's longtime architect Paul Gerhardt Jr.; and
WHEREAS, its design in the modern style of 1960 was a deliberate act to bring creative modern architecture into the community; and
WHEREAS, the building represented new advances in police procedure and law enforcement practice of a rapidly changing city and era; and
WHEREAS, the quality of the building's design and materials make it a timeless structure which can be shaped and adapted to vital purposes; and
WHEREAS, after the 13th District Police Station closed, the community wanted a law enforcement presence to remain in the area; and
WHEREAS, Alderman Proco Joe Moreno began discussions with Cook County Sheriff Thomas Dart to relocate the Warrant Division to the building at 937 North Wood Street, thereby retaining a law enforcement presence in the area; and
WHEREAS, the relocation ofthe Warrant Division is an example ofthe partnership between the City of Chicago and the County of Cook and also the reusing and repurposing ofthe building is a sustainable practice; and
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and members of the City Council of the City of Chicago assembled here this 11th day of September, 2013 express our gratitude to the Cook County Sheriff for continuing to use the building and providing a law enforcement presence for the 1st Ward; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be presented in the new Sheriffs Office at 937 North Wood. .
